After the toughest period of restrictions imposed by the COVID-19<\/span> pandemic, the Inter-American Telecommunications Commission (CITEL<\/span>) of the Organization of American States (OAS<\/span>) finally returned to hold a face-to-face meeting last month of April in Mexico City.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Approximately during the last 2 years the meetings were virtual, but with limitations in the progress of the work and to the positioning of the countries of Region 2 (American Continent) to be taken to the next World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC<\/span>), which will be held in 2023.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

IARU<\/span> actively participated in those meetings as international organization observer. In the 38th<\/sup> (virtual) edition of CITEL<\/span>\u00b4s Permanent Communications Commission 2 (Radiocommunications), IARU<\/span> presented its preliminary positions involving six CMR-23<\/span> agenda items that directly or indirectly affect amateur radio bands.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Now in the 39th<\/sup> edition (in person), more details were provided for the defense of 10 GHz in the face of debates and studies about possible sharing of the band with IMT<\/span> (International Mobile Telecommunications) applications, one of the themes of WRC-23<\/span>.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Additionally, possible actions to be made by CITEL<\/span> were also informally discussed to encourage the adoption of the International Amateur Radio Permit (IARP<\/span>) by more countries.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Radio amateurs are also traditionally part of some OAS<\/span> country-member delegations, contributing to the discussions and acting as rapporteurs on WRC-23<\/span> agenda items.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

IARU<\/span> also remained active in other regional telecommunications organizations (RTO<\/span>), such as the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT<\/span>, Region 1) and the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT<\/span>, Region 3), carrying out similar actions to CITEL<\/span> in their respective regions. IARU<\/span> maintains regionals and global coordination that allows the exchange of information and integration of its collaborators.<\/p>\n

Bryan Rawlings VE3QN<\/span>, Paul Coverdale VE3ICV<\/span>, Jon Siverling WB2ERA<\/span>, Victor Pinilla XE1VP<\/span> and Flavio Archangelo PY2ZX<\/span> were among those followed and contributed to the discussions happened in the CITEL<\/span> meetings.<\/p>\n
